Your Role:

As a Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) Nurse Specialist – IP, you will review inpatient medical records to improve the quality, accuracy, and completeness of clinical documentation. You will work closely with physicians, coding teams, and revenue cycle partners to support accurate coding, appropriate reimbursement, and regulatory compliance.

Specifically, you will:

  • Conduct concurrent and retrospective reviews of inpatient medical records to accurately capture Severity of Illness (SOI) and Risk of Mortality (ROM).
  • Issue compliant physician queries following AHIMA and ACDIS guidelines to resolve documentation gaps and manage the query process through completion.
  • Collaborate with Coding and Revenue Integrity teams to support accurate MS-DRG and APR-DRG assignment in accordance with ICD-10 coding guidelines.
  • Support clinical denial prevention initiatives by validating medical necessity and providing documentation clarification during payer reviews.
  • Track daily CDI activities, including chart reviews, physician queries, and DRG impact, using internal reporting tools.
  • Prepare weekly and monthly reports highlighting provider response rates, documentation trends, and opportunities for process improvement.
  • Participate in ongoing education and contribute to the continuous improvement of CDI policies, workflows, and best practices.

What You Need:

Non-negotiables

  • At least 2 years of inpatient Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years of acute care clinical experience in a hospital setting, preferably in ICU or Medical-Surgical units.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
  • Active Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) Registered Nurse (PHRN) license or active USRN license.
  • Current professional certification such as CCDS, CDIP, or CCS.
  • Strong knowledge of Revenue Cycle Management (RCM), ICD-10-CM/PCS coding, MS-DRG methodology, and risk adjustment.
  • Experience using hospital electronic medical record (EMR) systems such as Epic, Cerner, or Meditech.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills (minimum CEFR B2 level).

Preferred skills/expertise

  • Master's degree or additional professional certification in healthcare or a related field.
  • Experience using CDI and coding workflow technologies, as well as Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, SharePoint, and Teams.
  • Strong clinical judgment, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary healthcare teams in a fast-paced environment.
